The UC Berkeley Chancellor’s Fund, LLC is a separate for-profit LLC, wholly owned by the UC Regents that uses designated gifts to make and hold direct investments in the UC ecosystem of innovation startups in exchange for corporate equity and related securities.

The Fund will work in close partnership with UC Berkeley’s innovation and entrepreneurship programs, including IP licensing, SkyDeck, Bakar Labs, BAIR Commons, CITRIS Foundry, etc., and investing in startups that are incubated there. It will attract founders to our campus with potential funding opportunities for their startups, and further cement the UC Berkeley’s brand both on their company capitalization tables and within the larger VC investment community. The formation of this new fund is part of Berkeley’s long-term vision of enhancing and growing the startup ecosystem on campus and expanding investment opportunities for our founders and shared return VC partners

The majority of the Fund’s investments will be from the UC Berkeley innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem of startups. The Fund is also authorized to make investments in startups that are affiliated with the other UC campuses.

The Chancellor’s Fund Investment Committee and UC leadership will make investment decisions.

No. All gifts made to the Regents on behalf of the Fund are accepted under the UC Regents’ Gift Acceptance Policy and must come with no strings attached.

The Fund is a legal entity that is separate from the campus and is wholly owned by The Regents of the University of California. Campus and other UC employees are providing services to the Fund under a contract with UC. In exchange, UC receives sole ownership of the Fund and sole rights to any of the Fund’s returns. For any future joint investments by the Fund with third-party investors, UC will charge market rates for any services provided to them related to those joint investments.
